corporel/körperlich [Miriam Cahn]

by Marina Buston

Location: Centre Culturel Suisse

End date: December 14

Swiss artist Miriam Cahn started working with color in 1994. Before that, she used only black and white imagery in her drawings and paintings. In the collection shown at Centre Culturel Suisse, you can see when she crossed over into a more passionate form of expression. There’s a great volume of her work on display, and a great variety as well. There’s a room with high ceilings and a skylight featuring several tall canvases depicting ghostly trees, humans, animals and abstracts. Another part of the gallery features sketches laid out on the ground, and a railing covered in photographs. I loved the depth of all her work, and the fearlessness. She expresses her feminism and antimilitarism in her art. It is angry and provocative, but also soft and haunting.
