Images sans titres [Michal Batory]
By Marina Buston
Location: Jola Sidi Gallery / 80 rue des Gravilliers
End date: January 15
Polish graphic artist, Michal Batory’s art was originally used for eye-catching theatre posters to advertise plays, companies and theaters. It is easy to see why his work was first intended for posters; it features clean lines, bright colours and attention-grabbing imagery. However, the subject matter depicted by the artist also stands alone as powerful, captivating, and certainly more than advertisements for other art forms. In the Jola Sidi Gallery you will find surrealistic and chilling images in vibrant colours that combine the human form and everyday objects that are rarely featured in art. There are cotton swabs and candle wax, silver scissors and a single nail. It’s clear that Batory loves to create unlikely pairings in his work. The collection is small, but fascinating and rich; perfect for a poetic, Parisian afternoon walk through Le Marais.
