Exposition PassWorld

Invites: Artisetes Mexicains de Baja California, l’autre Californie

By: Eden Carter

Location: Salle Olympe de Gouges / 15 rue Merlin

End Date: Nov 9 2014

Humble and intimate, the artists of PassWorld filled a basement gallery with enough color to make you forget your surroundings and move swiftly through the space, hoping to understand the contrasting motives and mediums.

If my friend hadn’t tipped me off I may have never found this tiny exhibition buried in the basement, hiding behind the brush in Le jardin d’enfants Olympe de Gouges. Upon entering the building I still questioned if I was in the right location. Then through the tiny gym doors I saw an explosion of color—a chaotic ensemble of sculpture, painting and photography.

In all honesty my first impression left me a tad skeptical. Certain pieces made me feel as though I was walking through the gym of a much younger collection of artistes, but upon closer examination uncovered gems that nestled themselves into my questioning little heart.

Some of the Montmartre-dwellers may have recognized work by street artist Dilian, whose charming pieces could also be found in pictures presented by photographer Alex Tassot. Alex adds to Dilian’s quaint creations, featuring intriguing locals well positioned against the rough walls of northern Paris.

The tiny wooden carvings done by Philippe Alexandre Dupont and the captivating birds eye view painted by Denise Demaret-Pranville leave us feeling small in our giant world, while the portraits chaotically assembled by painter Christian Rouchouse bring us closer to the persona of iconic figures, most notably that of Salvador Dali.

Though it wasn’t an exhibition that will knock you out and hang at the forefront of your memories, I was pleased to have been tipped off and grateful to the strong presence of its artists who were readily available for questioning. Keep your eyes peeled for the vibrant talent of these PassWorld contributors.
